American bakeries range from wholesale operations that supply restaurants to neighborhood shops that sell bread, pastries, cookies and cakes over the counter, and many of them also pour coffee. Bagel shops boil and bake on site and sell out of favorite flavors by late morning; donut shops open before dawn and are often family-run; patisseries and cake studios take custom orders for weddings and birthdays and usually need one to two weeks' notice. Ice cream parlors, gelato shops and frozen yogurt bars are seasonal in the northern states and year-round in the South and on the West Coast. Prices are posted per item, by the dozen or by the pound, and most shops now take cards and mobile payment.

Wilmington is in North Carolina, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Wilmington is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across North Carolina's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Gelarto is the perfect place to stop for a sweet treat while strolling the Wilmington Riverwalk. The shop has a charming atmosphere, friendly staff, and an impressive selection of gelato flavors, so thereβs something for everyone. The service was welcoming and patient while we sampled a few flavors before deciding. Everything we tried was creamy, fresh, and full of flavor. Another pleasant surprise was the priceβit was very reasonable, especially for the quality and generous portions.

Gelarto is located in Downtown Wilmington along the Riverwalk, housed inside the historic J.W. Brooks Warehouse Building. The vibe here is so much fun, featuring a whimsical layout with beautiful paintings on the walls that all have playful gelato-themed accents. I'm not sure which I like the best, but maybe the Mona Lisa or American Gothic. For seating, they have unique stools made from upcycled Vespa motor scooters, alongside traditional tables and chairs. The gelato and waffle cones are manufactured directly in Turin, Italy. There are 40 flavors, but they rotate regularly, so not all are available at the same time. Samples are provided before you order. I am still trying to time my visits just right for the cinnamon! Besides their premium gelato, they offer fruit sorbets, shakes, and specialty cakes, as well as coffee if you are just looking for a warm beverage. On my last visit, I ordered two scoopsβone of vanilla and one of chocolate hazelnutβand it was delicious as always. Just a helpful heads-up that the actual utensils they give you to eat your cup with are those very small, traditional-tasting spoons rather than standard ice cream spoons! Gelarto does have an exceptiona

Delicious gelato and sorbets! Couldnβt have anything better than this while itβs scorching outside. Staff are friendly, not stingy with giving samples, and fair pricing for good quality. This gelato spot is a must every time we pass through the riverwalk!! Mixed berry/passion fruit (underneath) and mango/passionfruit.

This is one unique ice cream parlor. The flavors are very unique as well some of your traditional flavors but others are quite unique. I highly suggest getting the three scoops for $7 this way you can get a good feel of your favorite flavors in one bowl. The staff is friendly nice and offer really good suggestions if you tell them what's on your mind and what you're thinking about trying. And I like that in a staff something that's appreciated and that they value their customers. When I'm back in town that is definitely one place I'm definitely going to check out again. From the silent traveler this place gets a A1

One of the best gelatos Iβve ever had! Every time I go, I try a different flavor and Iβm just in love with all of them. My favorite are passion fruit and nougat. Their coffee is amazing too!!! Perfect location at the boardwalk of downtown. The decoration is fun and vivid. Perfect place to enjoy a delicious cold treat with a view!
